Description: Zeos International, Ltd. was a US company engaged in computer hardware and desktop industries. The company was established in 1981 at Minneapolis, Minnesota by Mr. Gregory E. Herrick. Zeos’ principal place of business was in Minnesota.
Before engaging into the computer manufacturing industry, the company, then operating under the name NPC Electronics, was a contractor and producer of a transmitter device known as Radio Realty. By mid 1985, the company went public and consequently changed the company’s official name to Zeos International.
The Zeos International, Ltd. operated under the leadership of its founder who also acted as CEO for the company. In 1992, the company acquired the engineering company known as PC Tech Inc. In 1996, Zeos also acquired Micron Computer, Inc. and Micron Custom Manufacturing Services, Inc. which were companies under Micron Technologies.
The product line of Zeos International, Ltd. consisted of notebooks and computer peripherals. In 1985, the company developed the company’s first motherboard product called Speeder that allowed the maximization of the 8086 processor. Two years after, the first Zeos computer was introduced and sold to the market.
In 1991, the company was recognized as Fortune’s fastest growing public corporation. The company was able to introduce a number of Zeos-processor based desktop computers at the time when its operation was in its peak.
Desktops that were distributed by the company carried the brand names Discovery, Ambra, Pantera, and Millenium. The company also sold notebooks carrying the brand names Freestyle and Meridian as well as subnotebooks that carried the brand names Contenda and Zeos Pocket PC.
The Zeos 386X motherboard was also chosen as Editor’s Choice in the magazine’s January 1990 issue. During the late stages of the company, models for the Zeos motherboards carried the model names of birds or serpents such as Goose, Duckling, Rattler, Python, Boa, and Coral.
Zebra is the first company to bundle applications using its system that eventually forced the company’s known competitors, namely Dell and Gateway 2000, to perform the same as well. Soon, the bundling of software in a single computer became an industry standard. Zeos was also responsible for introducing the first 24/7 tool-free technical support and the foremost company to use the e-commerce system.
However, Micron Technologies took over the struggling Zeos International Ltd. which resulted in the eventual phase out of all Zeos brands. The acquisition resulted in the renaming of the company to Micron Electronics Inc. and the transfer of its base of operations to Nampa, Idaho.
