Description: Zoom Technologies Inc. produces a number of communication devices and technologies. It uses the brand names Global Village, Zoom and Hayes to distribute VOIP (Voice over IP) gateways, ADSL, cable and dial-up modems, Bluetooth audio product, ISDN, dialers, OEM products, Wireless-G LAN products and Bluetooth wireless devices.
The company’s current executives are President and CEO Frank B. Manning, CFO and Vice-President for Finance Robert A. Crist and Vice-Oresident for Operations Deena M. Randall.
The VOIP service is being managed under the name Global Village. It is a web based telephone service provided to ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and Internet phone service companies. The service is then used by Zoom’s clients to provide VOIP services to end-consumers. One common use for the VOIP machines from Zoom is for Session Initiation Protocols (SIP). The devices are also used for making Internet phone calls through Skype.
Cable Modems, ZoomTel Voice and ADSL devices are sold through other companies’ product lines. OEM products are also sold to other companies that manufacture and assemble computers. These OEM products are often matched with software from other companies. One such system created this way is a combination of Zoom’s OPTIMA modem and AutoSync programs.
Zoom products have won a number of awards throughout the years. The Zoom/Faxmodem 56K was given the Testers Choice Award by Data Communications in August 1997. In September 1997, CNET awarded its K56flex modems with the BUY IT recommendation in September 1997 due to its performance and competitive price. These commendations continued from consumer groups and magazines. In February 2003, The Zoom ADSL modem was awarded five stars via the WebUser Gold Award. The Zoom Dialer was awarded the Internet Telephony Editor’s Choice Award by TMC Labs in September 2003.
Zoom products are distributed via a number of channels. Retail stores like Best Buy carry the devices so that it can be purchased by end-users. Other companies also distribute the products. The companies include Tech Data and Micro. About 50% of the company’s yearly sales come from the top 3 consumer sales accounts of the company. By the end of the 2007 fiscal year, revenue of 18.50 million US dollars was reported. The main competitors of Zoom are Motorola, Inc., U.S. Robotics and the 3Com Corporation.
The main offices of the company are located in Boston. A branch was also established in the UK to provide sales and technical support for the European region. The products are available in more than forty countries. There are customer support services located in Massachusetts, Florida and the UK. These facilities provide multi-lingual support to consumers.
