Description: ZyDAS Technology Corp. is a major provider of DSLAM, networking components/appliances/devices and other networking products. The company has its headquarters in the Science-Based Industrial Park in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Its main office is a small firm focused on the design of WLAN USB Adapters. It has a fabless design facility for integrated circuits for communications and it was formerly a unit of ZyXEL Communications Corp. and has more than 70 workers.

Norman Hung serves as the President while Wayne Hwang serves as the Chief Executive Officer of ZyDAS Technology. It became independent from ZyXEL in March 2000 and it has concentrated on USB products that are based on SoC technology for the WLAN market. On April 24, 2006, Atheros Communications Inc. acquired ZyDAS Technology to expand its engineering capabilities and include ZyDAS WLAN products to its product lines.

Before the acquisition by Atheros, ZyDAS had signed a deal with UMC for the production of the ZyDAS ZD1211 on April 14, 2004. The ZD1211 is a USB 2.0 interface, Baseband Processor and Medium Access Controller for WLANs. This is made up only of one chip that is highly integrated for a WLAN solution that is easy to use, requires low power and affords high security and high throughput. This chip is compliant with the three standards for wireless technology namely, 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g.

ZyDAS has also developed the appropriate software for the ZD1211 to afford add-on capabilities that complement the ZD1211 hardware abilities. With the Software Access Point program, the ZD1211 becomes a client system, which has its own access point. With this feature, users could easily shift from the client system to the access point and link neighboring computers in an infrastructure approach with just one click, without having to worry about another access point apparatus. The ZD1211 also has an Auto-Installation feature that employs built-in flash memory to keep all utilities and drivers. This feature installs the WLAN device without human intervention or the need for a CD-ROM.

The stock and cash deal with Atheros was estimated to have a value of $23 million. All of the employees of ZyDAS were absorbed into Atheros with about 75 percent of the staff involved in R&D. Key employees in R&D have more than 15 years of skills and knowledge with regards to IC design, DSP algorithms, real-time operating systems, communication protocols and channel characterization.
